Labib: Eight years of uncertainty, and still moving forward
Labib arrived in the UK from Algeria in 2018, aged just 17, carrying the hope of building a new life in England. But the reality of seeking asylum was far more challenging than he ever imagined. What he thought might take months stretched into eight long years of waiting - a period he describes as “very, very, very hard.”
The uncertainty took a toll on his confidence and mental wellbeing. “I feel positive,” he said, “but I feel also I’ve lost that much of will, that much of hopes, that much of excitement.”
Now 26, Labib is determined to rebuild his future. He hopes to find stable work, continue his education and eventually study at university. He is particularly interested in construction management and IT - fields where he can apply his skills and build long‑term stability.
Transitions HUB has been a key source of support during this period. While navigating temporary accommodation and the challenge of finding somewhere permanent to live, Labib has been attending English classes and receiving career guidance to help him plan his next steps. “My situation is getting better mentally, and also my plans for future,” he shared.
Beyond practical support, Labib values the sense of community the Hub provides. Social trips like the visit to the V&A Museum of Childhood - offer a chance to meet people from different cultures, practise English and explore London together. “Very nice thing to do. To meet different people from different cultures and learn new things.”
Despite the setbacks he has faced, Labib remains hopeful and determined. His message to others going through similar challenges is simple but powerful: “Never give up. Keep strong and patient. Keep pushing and you will reach your goals.”
Labib’s story reflects the resilience, patience and courage shown by many Transitions HUB participants as they work to rebuild their lives in the UK.
